The Next Big Thing? Y&R has positioned Sally (Courtney Hope) and Billy (Jason Thompson) for romance.

Young and Restless is toying with a potential pairing: Billy and Sally. The two characters are still reeling from being cheated on by their repective exes, Chelsea and Adam, who fell into bed together while dealing with the drama of their son Connor’s OCD. In the interim, Billy and Sally have found comfort in each other, discussing their shared plight. The duo recently kissed, but quickly agreed it was a mistake they shouldn’t make again – or take to the next level. Yet that appears to be a case of them protesting too much.

Would a Billy and Sally coupling actually be a good thing that could work? Or would it be a huge mistake destined for failure? (Find out actor Jason Thompson’s thoughts on the pairing here.)

The Cons

Billy and Sally are both on the rebound. Billy still has strong feelings for Chelsea, while Sally can’t deny her deep love for Adam. Jumping into a new relationship when they’re in this head space would be rash and unfair to both of them. Neither of them is thinking straight. Their judgment is too clouded. Before embarking on a new romance with anyone, they each need to take some time to heal and find closure with the one that just ended.

Sally hasn’t had much luck with love in general, but particularly when it comes to becoming entangled with bad boys. Her relationship with the Newman family black sheep, Adam, was an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish, leaving her heartbroken and in tears time after time. Getting involved with Billy, a spoiled rich screw-up with a gambling addiction, would likely offer more of the same. He has the same self-destructive chromosome as Adam. Sally needs to stop focusing on fixer-upper projects and turn her attention toward finding a stable good guy with a solid foundation.

A case could be made that Billy and Sally are too much alike to work. They’re a pair of outcasts who never seem to get things right. They’re always striving for better and searching for stability, but never seem to achieve it. Getting together might only compound their problems and impede their chances for a happy future.

Then there’s the Victor factor. His disdain for Billy and Sally as individuals knows no bounds. If they were to unite as a couple, it might well exacerbate his animosity toward both of them. It could incite him to not only want to tear them down, but totally destroy them. Surely Billy and Sally wouldn’t want to open themselves up to that potential scenario.

The Pros

On the other hand, the fact that Billy and Sally are two of a kind could actually work in their favor. They’d be more adept at fully understanding one other and knowing what makes the other one tick. It could open the door to complete honesty between them, something they haven’t really had with anyone in their past. That could lay the groundwork for and give them a real chance at a successful relationship.

Billy’s always longed for approval, someone who truly believes in him and will stand by his side through thick and thin. He hasn’t had a relationship like that since his long-ago marriage to Victoria, when he was at his best. Sally has always been supportive of Billy. She’s been cheering him on during his recent business woes and battle with Victor. She might be able to bring out that best side in him again, and that Billy would make a viable romantic partner. We could see them forming an “us against the world” mentality that could make them a force to be reckoned with.

Isn’t friendship supposed to be the key to a healthy long-lasting relationship? Billy and Sally have definitely developed a strong one. They supported each other and bonded through the Adam/Chelsea debacle. They listen to each other’s problems. They don’t judge one another. All of the above could be the perfect recipe for a successful partnership.

The Bottom Line

Sally and Billy certainly have potential as a romantic twosome, but things need time to be taken slowly. Rushing in too quickly would be a mistake considering everything they’ve endured of late. They need to get to know each other better and let things blossom between them organically. Then and only then do they stand a chance at a solid happy future together.
